Diplo Tried To Copy Sturgill Simpson On New Song “Thunderclouds”

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

According to an interview with the LA Times, the popular EDM producer and DJ Diplo is celebrating his new-found dose of maturity by channeling his inner Sturgill Simpson.

“A bunch of frat boys singing about how you’re a ho — it’s kind of cringe-y,” he said, shaking his head. “I’m too old to play songs like that.”

So rather than producing the next club banger and “chasing number 1’s,” Diplo is focusing more on his own creative integrity. For his new song “Thunderclouds,” a collaboration with Sia and Labrinth, Diplo said he was “trying to copy Sturgill Simpson,” of all people.

That doesn’t mean Diplo is going to go out and produce a country album, but you can’t deny the impact that Sturgill is having on artists across multiple genres. And, that’s definitely not a bad thing.
