Last month, it was announced that Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires and Maren Morris were coming together to form The Highwomen, a group that Carlile described as “a musical movement.” And last night, the group of power women gave their first live performance together to celebrate one of the original powerhouse women of country music: Loretta Lynn.
At Loretta Lynn’s all-star birthday celebration concert in Nashville, Carlile, Shires and Morris were joined by Natalie Hemby to pay tribute to Lynn with their version of “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels.” First released by Kitty Wells in 1952, the song was later covered by another group of powerful women that included Loretta Lynn herself – along with Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, and Wells.
Just listen to those harmonies… I think The Highwomen did Loretta proud and I can’t wait to hear more from them.
