Welp, it looks like the inevitable has officially happened…
According to ESPN, Dan Mullen has been relieved of his duties as head football coach at Florida after a bad 24-23 overtime loss to the Missouri Tigers.
I think we all saw this coming: The Gators are a very disappointing 5-6 on the season, and 2-6 in the SEC alone.
They’ve also lost four straight games to Power 5 opponents, and are 2-9 against Power 5 teams since the last three games of 2020.
That won’t keep ya a job at a storied program like Florida.
It’s been a pretty astonishing slide for Mullen and his Florida Gators, after contending for a spot in the College Football Playoffs last year before losing a close one to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.
In fact, a year ago Mullen was 26-6 at Florida before the wheels seemingly fell off and the Gators lost three straight to end the season. In his first two seasons as head coach of the Gators, Mullen went 10-3 and 11-2 and finished 2nd in the SEC East.
But this year, the Gators will finish the season next to last in the SEC East (thanks to Vanderbilt and their dumpster fire of a football program) and will have the second worst record in the entire SEC (again, thanks to Vandy).
Just an incredible meltdown from a program that’s used to being near the top of the SEC.
Greg Knox, Florida’s running backs coach and special teams coordinator, will take over as interim head coach.
Mullen ends his Florida run with a 34-15 record, and a $12 million buyout. He’s owed $6 million within 30 days with the remaining $6 million paid out yearly in $1 million payments.
We’ll have to wait and see who they hire to replace Mullen, but I have a suggestion: Florida calls their stadium “The Swamp,” and I know a guy looking for a job who’s pretty comfortable in swamps.
Coach O to Florida? Talk about electric.
