When you think of 90’s country music, which some say was the “Golden Age of Country,” the Hot Country Knights come to mind.
The band has been putting out hit songs for decades, though most music fans only discovered them in 2015. Most recently, the retro band released two songs that really made a splash and became instant HCK classics.
“Midknight Rodeo” really shook up country music radio with its implicit, over-the-top, blatant innuendoes, but “Herassment stood out as the best of the two singles. The song also featured lead singer Doug Douglason’s old romantic flame Darla McFarland, who looks and sings like country music star Lainey Wilson.
Upon the release of the two singles, Doug spoke on the songs and their importance:
“The Knights are back, baby. Being off the road since the Big V (virus) has really made us reflect on what we had taken for granted.
When you have a chance to really get to the core of what these songs are about, it’s just a raw appreciation for the most satisfying parts of life. I don’t expect anyone to get it on the first six or seven listens, this is deep thinking stuff.”
Since the two certified platinum songs (I’m sure they will be soon enough) were made public, the Hot Country Knights have been touring along with Dierks Bentley on his Gravel & Gold Tour. Come to think of it, I guess Doug Douglason and Dierks look a lot alike as well…
And based on the Hot Country Knights’ TikTok account, it appears that Darla McFarland joined the band during their performance at Country Jam USA back in July. However, they didn’t just stick to the HCK catalogue when they were performing.
Instead, Doug Douglason and Darla McFarland broke into Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s song “It’s Your Love,” with a little Hot Country Knights twist of course. Doug and Darla were passionately dueting the McGraw and Faith Hill classic, and when they got to the pre-chorus, instead of just singing:
“And now that we’re together, I’m stronger than ever I’m happy and free. Oh, it’s a beautiful thing Don’t think I can keep it all in. I just gotta let you know What it is that won’t let me go.”
The Hot Country Knights added in a special, heartfelt moment in between the verse and pre-chorus, with Doug belting:
“Here we are now In the lights of the song. And all I want from you Is to put your two hands on my ding-dong.”
HCK and Darla McFarland then get back on track with the actual words to the pre-chorus and chorus after the fact. I wonder if Tim McGraw and Faith Hill would give their stamp of approval on the cover…
