Dillon Carmichael has country music in his blood.
The nephew of John Michael Montgomery and Eddie Montgomery of Montgomery Gentry, Carmichael has a country music pedigree that’s pretty unmatched.
But if you’re wondering whether he has the talent to back it up, his latest EP should erase any remaining doubt.
Hot Beer shows off Carmichael’s powerful, traditional country voice, but also his impressive songwriting chops and the range of tunes he’s able to pull off.
From the cheeky songs like “Sawin’ Logs” and “Big Truck” to the heartbreaker “Somewhere She Ain’t,” and the rockin’ love song “Since You Been In It,” Carmichael manages to cram an impressive display of versatility into only six songs.
Then there’s his current single and the title track for the EP, “Hot Beer,” which is a country as hell breakup anthem in the same vein as Luke Combs’ “When It Rains It Pours” that just puts a smile on your face.
Oh, and of course there’s his cover of his Montgomery Gentry’s “Lucky Man,” which Carmichael said he wanted to record not only because of his uncle but also as a tribute to the late, great Troy Gentry.
Carmichael’s music was clearly influenced by his uncles – which is a great thing, because it’s got that ’90s country sound that I can’t get enough of. And not only that, the resemblance of his voice to his uncle Eddie’s is damn near uncanny.
With co-writes from guys like Casey Beathard, David Lee Murphy and Hardy, and production from Jon Pardi, Carmichael has clearly surrounded himself with all the right people to make the kind of music that country fans desperately want right now.
I’ve been excited about Dillon Carmichael for awhile, but after this latest EP, it’s pretty clear that he’s one of the most promising young guys out there right now.
