Making drama where there is none.

That was Carly Pearce‘s response after the singer was accused of throwing shade at fellow singer Maren Morris by recording a duet with Maren’s now ex-husband, Ryan Hurd.

Morris and Hurd filed for divorce last fall, and the split was finalized at the end of last year. But they’ve both remained relatively quiet, no doubt focusing more on raising their son and continuing on with their own careers.

And Carly Pearce recently joined Ryan Hurd for a cover of Tom Petty’s “Breakdown” on the upcoming tribute album, Petty Country, which also features names like Chris Stapleton, Dolly Parton, Luke Combs and George Strait.

Not a big deal, right?

Well this is 2024, where people look for drama. And one X (formerly Twitter) user apparently saw the duet as a shot at Hurd’s former wife Maren Morris.

Seems like a bit of a stretch. And by that I mean it seems pretty ridiculous, but hey, that’s how things go on the interwebs these days.

Well Carly got wind of the speculation, and jumped in quick to shut it down:

“Okay. Since I have seen this all over, I figured I would respond. Ryan has a been a friend of mine for over 10 yrs. I was asked by my label to record this song with him for the Petty tribute and of course I said yes because he’s a great artist. STOP making something out of nothing!”

Sounds pretty obvious, right? I mean, chances are this duet has been in the works for a while, likely long before Maren and Hurd announced their split. But that’s the way things go online today, where you can twist anything to try to fit your narrative.

But hey, at least the guy apologized… quite a rarity in the online universe.
