George Strait holds the record for the most #1 hits in country music.

You often hear people throwing around that statistic, because, well, 60 #1 hits is pretty staggering, and almost unbelievable.

Hell, Eric Church even made a whole dang drinking game out of it (which just makes me respect him even more, honestly).

But, the song that initially set the record back in 2006 was his 41st #1 hit “Give It Away,” which broke the previous record of the most #1 hits by a single country music artist on the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs chart. Before George Strait, the record was held by Conway Twitty with 40.

“Give It Away” was written by the great Jamey Johnson, Bill Anderson and Buddy Cannon, and was the lead single from George’s 24th studio album, 2006’s It Just Comes Natural.

It also won Song of the Year honors at the CMAs in 2007, and both the Single of the Year and Song of the Year awards the ACMs that year, as well.

I don’t know a single person who doesn’t love this song, and I really couldn’t think of a better one for him to break that kind of record with.

When Eric Church wrote “any song sung by George Strait is country at its best,” I’m fairly certain he had just listened to this one:

And while you’re here, you might as well watch Jamey sing it himself… it’s pretty awesome:
