Oh, boy! (pun very much intended).
The good people at Oh Boy Records (the label founded by the late, great John Prine back in the ’80s) are gearing up to release Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Volume 2.
If you’re not familiar, Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows is a 2010 John Prine covers album, with Volume 1 featuring artists like Justin Townes Earle, Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, Drive-By Truckers, and more.
And now, Volume 2 is on the way featuring Brandi Carlile, Sturgill Simpson and more.
“Oh Boy Records will be releasing Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine, Vol. 2. this Fall. The special tribute album will consist of contemporary artists, many of which were dear friends of John, performing John Prine covers.”
Slated for a release this fall, Brandi Carlile kicked off the tribute album with “I Remember Everything,” the final song that John ever wrote. And now today, Sturgill is here with a stellar rendition of “Paradise.”
Written and recorded by John for his 1971 debut album John Prine, “Paradise” was written for his father, a lament on havoc the coal industry wreaked on his Kentucky home.
It’s only proper that Sturgill, a fellow Kentuckian who has his fair share of songs lambasting the coal industry, would do this one the justice that it deserves.
Sturgill’s cover of “Paradise” also happens to be the last song ever recorded at The Butcher Shoppe in Nashville, a recording studio owned by John.
Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Volume 2 is set to drop October 8th, 2021.
