Dutton Ranch might feel like a continuation of Yellowstone, but Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser say the heart of their spinoff show is much different than the flagship series.
Fans can’t wait to see Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler back on their screens again. The show, which has been described as “Yellowstone Season 6,” will finally premiere on May 15. And in a recent interview with Bild over in Berlin, Germany, the show’s stars discussed what fans can expect from the highly anticipated spinoff.
Kelly Reilly first admitted that the ending for her and Hauser’s characters in Yellowstone was ideal:
“‘Dutton Ranch’ is a new beginning. Not just for Beth and Rip, but for Cole and myself. Yellowstone’s ending was, for me, absolutely as it should be. The ranch and the land were protected. That promise was upheld. The land went back to the Native Americans. Beth and Rip had bought a small piece of land that they were going to start their new life with.”
They had certainly seemed to have found their happy place. But much like Kayce Dutton’s story continuing in Marshals, there must be some sort of catalyst that pushed them back into the violence they worked so hard to escape. Dutton Ranch will start in Montana, but some sort of event (Hauser describes it as lightning literally striking) ends up leading them to start a new life in Texas.
Cole Hauser describes it as the characters looking for peace:
“From that, we kind of have to pick up the pieces, and try to figure out this new life. We make a decision and take a risk to go somewhere new, and start new. We get on the road and head to Texas with Carter. We are looking for peace. We are looking for a moment to really breathe… the characters are trying to find some sort of peace, and that doesn’t last very long.”
As to what happens after they get to Texas? I suppose we’ll all find that out when Dutton Ranch starts airing on Paramount+.
Reilly did give fans an idea of what the engine of the show will be. She related it back to Yellowstone, and the roles that Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler filled for John Dutton:
“For me, ‘Yellowstone’ was all about us serving John Dutton. And this promise, this legacy, and the burden and beauty of that. Now, they don’t have it, and they just have one another. For me, ‘Dutton Ranch,’ its heart is not about the land anymore. It’s about the humans and the people and the family.
One might say Yellowstone and John Dutton didn’t put his children first. The promise and the protection of land, that was his main focus, and Beth and Rip would die defending it for him. Without that, they now choose one other and Carter. They choose the protection of the family.”
It’ll certainly be interesting to see how Beth and Rip operate in Dutton Ranch. From all of the teasers and trailers we’ve seen thus far, it looks like their motivation might change, but their cut throat nature and violent ways will stay the same.
