Yellowstone fans are going to love the forthcoming Dutton Ranch spinoff… according to director Greg Yaitanes.
The talented director has previously worked on shows like House of the Dragon, Presumed Innocent and the beloved series House. Now, Yaitanes is venturing into the Yellowstone universe, directing episodes of both the Kayce Dutton-focused Marshals and the continuation of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler’s stories in Dutton Ranch.
He never directed anything from the flagship series… but Yaitanes describes himself as a huge fan of Yellowstone.
In a recent interview with Collider, Greg Yaitanes explained that a run-in with executive producer David Glasser (Taylor Sheridan’s right-hand-man) years ago led to them keeping in touch, and eventually working together. Yaitanes actually reached out to Glasser after watching Mobland – which is produced by Glasser’s 101 Studios – and not too long after that, he was asked to take a look at Marshals to see if he was interested.
That was the director’s in, and once he had the opportunity to jump into the Yellowstone universe, he did just that. It was during the process of shooting for Marshals that Yaitanes was then asked if he’d want to jump over to Dutton Ranch – a Yellowstone spinoff that, unlike Marshals, would be on streaming rather than network television:
“I was halfway through shooting on ‘Marshals,’ and Glasser was like, ‘Hey, you’ve done the down and dirty, scrappy version of ‘Yellowstone.’ Come do our other show.’ That was a completely different, but equally rewarding experience.
It’s just a different kind of show. It’s much more of a drama and a soap. It has the best parts of what I loved about ‘Yellowstone.’ Each one was ‘Yellowstone’ in completely different ways, but each completely honest to the original series.
Easy to assume that one being on streaming and one being on CBS is how each spinoff is like it’s predecessor in “completely different ways.”
The Marshals and Dutton Ranch director stated that both shows are compelling in their own, unique ways, but that Dutton Ranch feels more like a continuation of Yellowstone…. mainly because much of the cast and crew working on it is the same that worked together for five seasons on the hit show. Yaitanes, who directed episodes three and four of the upcoming Beth and Rip spinoff, says that those who worked on Yellowstone previously helped to executive this new spinoff like the original Dutton family drama… so it certainly sounds like Dutton Ranch will more so be a continuation of Yellowstone.
Yaitanes actually confirmed that when he fielded a question about a potential crossover episode. Considering he’s worked on both shows, he’d be the one that could be trusted to bring the Yellowstone characters on different programs back together again.
The director entertained the thought, and described what he thought would work best before dropping a really exciting line about Dutton Ranch feeling like a sixth season of the original series:
“We talked about that a lot because each wanted to be on the other show. I feel like Kayce should go to ‘Dutton Ranch.’ That feels like something that I would lose my sh*t over as a fan. That would be pretty cool. I just don’t know, in the world of what ‘Marshals’ is, if Beth coming in would fit into that quite as well.
Kayce would just naturally fold into ‘Dutton Ranch’ because there’s a tonal similarity to the original ‘Yellowstone.’ A lot of the people involved with ‘Dutton Ranch’ really felt like they were making ‘Yellowstone’ Season 6. ‘Marshals’ is much more genre and guns-forward and those kinds of cool things.”
You love to hear that.
For all those Yellowstone fans out there complaining that Marshals feels a lot different than the show Kayce Dutton was originally a part of… just hold on. Wait for Dutton Ranch to roll around. It appears it’s basically going to be Yellowstone Season 6 disguised as a whole new spinoff.
Dutton Ranch is reportedly still working on getting some scenes put together after beginning the filming process back in August of last year. It’s been advertised to come out at some point in 2026, so here’s to hoping the release is sooner rather than later.
