Cat videos always have the ability to go viral… and when a feline stands up against a black bear like in this video, it’s almost certain to garner millions and millions of views.
You always hear about curiosity and cats… but what about courage? Sure, being brave could put some felines in tough spots, but in this video, a house cat had the tenacity to stand up against a black bear in the wild animal’s territory. That’s the textbook definition (or at least the “see example”) of courage if I’ve ever seen it.
Cats have a stereotype for being lazy, and not caring about their owners. Those things could very well be true, though it doesn’t encompass all cats that are out there. Especially this one that apparently likes to square up with big bears in its spare time. Forget guard dogs… this tabby cat is all you need to protect the house.
Just how it is with dogs, we have to remember that these cuddly pets we keep indoors had ancestors that fought for survival out in the wild. And our pets are still using that “fighting instinct,” just in different ways. Your dog might put up a battle for a specific seat on the couch, or your cat might start roaring throughout the house when you keep them waiting for their nightly meal.
It’s all the same really… just different.
The people that wandered up to this unlikely scene couldn’t believe how brave the little cat was being. If there were betting odds on this matchup, the black bear would be heavily favored. But that’s why everyone loves a good underdog (or in this case, undercat) story.
The commentary provided by those standing not too far away was hilarious:
“The cat is having a standoff with the bear… it’s standing its ground. I hope we don’t witness this cat get murdered.”
Yeah, they had it all wrong… they should have been worried about the bear getting absolutely destroyed by the cat.
Even though the apex predator could have made short work of the much smaller creature, it was as if two evenly matched boxers were standing across from one another. For a minute or so, the bear and the cat traded very soft paw pokes… that is until the cat pounced and smacked the black bear right upside the head.
It got startled and fled the area, and the people standing nearby – and those who came across the video on social media – couldn’t believe that the cat was actually able to scare off the bear:

It’s not about the size of the cat in the fight. It’s about the size of the fight in the cat.
I’d bet that’s the last time that bear tries to mess with a cat. And I’d assume the cat’s owners are sleeping pretty soundly at night, knowing their little feline possesses all the strength and bravery it needs to deter even the biggest and scariest of wild animals.
TikTok users were amazed that the cat was able to hold off a black bear, and left comments below the viral post like these:

“If cats were a lot bigger they would murder every living thing.”
