Some people just can’t appreciate greatness.
Sydney Sweeney might be one of the biggest names in Hollywood at the moment. Though her popularity hasn’t exactly translated to high-quality movies (see Madame Web), she’s quickly become a box office star following her breakout role in HBO’s Euphoria.
With that being said, she doesn’t everyone on board just yet. She without a doubt has basically all of the male demographic as fans (and I can’t figure out why), but one person that isn’t buying Sydney Sweeney stock is longtime Hollywood producer Carol Baum.
Baum started producing films back in the 1980s, and currently serves as a film professor at the University of Southern California. For a longtime, she closely worked with Dolly Parton as a movie producer and manager for the country star’s film company Sandollar Productions. She’s had an immense amount of experience in the industry, which I suppose lends her some credibility when it comes to criticizing other productions.
But Baum has the internet up in arms after her latest take about Sydney Sweeney, which specifically stemmed from a rant against the young actress’ latest film Anyone But You. According to the Daily Mail, the USC professor told her class that the rom-com was “unwatchable,” and that she didn’t understand what all the hubbub with Sydney Sweeney was all about.
The movie producer even reportedly said this to her class:
“Explain this girl to me. She’s not pretty, she can’t act. Why is she so hot?”
The internet has quickly let Carol Baum know that they don’t agree with her hot take of “Sydney Sweeney isn’t hot.” You can’t believe everything you read on the internet, but you do have to pay attention to the internet when everyone actually agrees on something. That’s a rare thing, and everyone is agreeing that Baum is wrong on this one.
The producer apparently tried to backtrack a bit when she went on to say that she didn’t blame movie executives for casting Sweeney, saying:
“We all want to get the movie made and who walks away from a green light? Nobody I know. Your job is to get the movie made.”
And the 26-year-old Sydney Sweeney gets movies made, that’s for sure. She also gets people in the seats of movie theaters, which is a very difficult thing to do in this day and age of cinema. We can just go ahead and conclude that Carol Baum was wrong with this take, right?
