From getting kicked off that Rascal Flatts tour which paved the way for a young teenager by the name of Taylor Swift (maybe you’ve heard of her?), to holding the Entertainer of the Year trophy in 2020, Eric Church‘s career is one of the more unique climbs to the top.

What’s remained steady throughout? Those passionate fans and that electric live show, building on each other, year after year.

Way back in 2007, Eric was just coming off his debut album, Sinners Like Me in 2006 when he took the stage in Nashville to cover one of his heroes, the great Waylon Jennings, to a crowd a fraction of the size he sees today.

Here was the new kid, leaving it all on the stage, singing Waylon Jennings‘ “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way.”

Released in 1975 as the lead single from his Dreaming My Dreams record, “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way” went on to become his 4th career #1 single. A toast to the great Hank Williams, the song laments the current state of country music, and let’s be honest, the song couldn’t be more relevant today.

Church tipped his cap to the Waylon Jennings song a few years later with his 2009 song “Lotta Boot Left To Fill” from his sophomore record, Carolina.
