Some heartbreaking news from the wrestling world.

According to TMZ, legendary wrestler The Iron Sheik, a former heavyweight champ and WWE Hall of Famer, has passed away at the age of 81.

A statement on his social media page reads:

“Today, we gather with heavy hearts to bid farewell to a true legend, a force of nature, and an iconic figure who left an incredible mark on the world of professional wrestling.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of The Iron Sheik, but we also take solace in knowing that he departed this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations to come.”

Sheik was born in Iran back in 1942, and was known as one of the biggest wrestlers in the history of the sport. He also beat Bob Backlund back in 1983 for the title.

The Iron Sheik was also known for being one of Hulk Hogan’s first rivals. After Hogan defeated Sheik for the belt, Hogan saw a massive rise to fame.

Sheik was also a WWF Tag Team champ, winning the strap with Nikolai Volkoff back in 1985.

He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame back in 2005.

The WWE released a statement as well, saying:

“WWE is saddened to hear of the passing of WWE Hall of Famer The Iron Sheik, and extends its condolences to his family, friends, and fans.”

RIP to a legend.
