Cheating Angler Charged With Felony For Stuffing Weights Into Bass At Texas Fishing Tournament

A fishing tournament in Texas has been rocked by scandal.

It all started after a fisherman named Curtis Lee Daniels presented a bass that weighed over 10 pounds. Organizers of the Lake Fork Lure Company Tournament were suspicious of the fish’s weight, and eventually used a metal detector on the bass to see if weights had potentially been added to the fish.

Sure enough, three different weights were discovered inside the entry that Daniels had turned in, and the weights that were found within the bass matched up with weights that were uncovered in Daniels’ fishing boat. The fisherman from Willow Park, Texas was promptly arrested, and the fishing tournament organizers released this statement about the incident:

“On behalf of our tournament staff and anglers, we want to sincerely thank you for your time and professionalism in investigating the recent fish manipulation incident this past weekend during the Lake Fork Lures Co. Tournament Presented by Sealy Outdoors. Maintaining fairness and integrity in competitive fishing is incredibly important to us, and we greatly appreciate the diligence and attention you gave to this matter.

Your efforts help protect the reputation of the sport and ensure that honest anglers can compete on a level playing field. We are grateful for the work you do every day to protect Texas waters and uphold the laws that keep our fisheries and outdoor traditions strong.”

Those are some big weights right there.

Because the prize money for the Lake Fork Lures Company tournament exceeded $10,000, Curtis Lee Daniels was charged with a third-degree felony. Prior to being caught stuffing his fish with weights, he had won two other hourly prizes that totaled around $2,500. To be clear, the Lake Fork Reservoir (where the tournament took place) is known for its premiere bass fishing… but those two hourly prizes that Daniels won probably weren’t legit either.

Once a cheater, always a cheater.

Fortunately, the rightful winner was given the prize after all of the illegal activity with Daniels was sorted out. William McDaniel, who is from Festus, Missouri, ended up taking home the grand prize money thanks to his bass that weighed in at 10.22 pounds… with no weights needed.

Personally, I’m not sure why fishermen are still trying to get away with stuffing fish in the modern day. A quick scan with a metal detector, or a swift slicing open of the fish can reveal weights in a heart beat. Yet still, there’s been countless examples of fishermen in big time tournaments pressing their luck and attempting to get away with tipping the scale in their favor.

These fishing tournament organizers have seen enough fish to know what a whopper of a fish should weigh. And these cheaters know that they could face serious repercussions – including felony charges and jail time – for trying to modify their fish’s weight. You may have heard that cheating is a choice, not a mistake. Cheaters never prosper (or at least you hope that they don’t), and Curtis Lee Daniels has learned that the hard way.
