Man of the people.
Last night, Jelly Roll stopped into the iconic Nashville honky tonk, Robert’s Western World, one of the few still playing traditional country music from doors open to doors close.
Flanked on stage by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, Jelly Roll treated fans to a performance of the Johnny Cash classic, “Folsom Prison Blues.”
Originally written in 1953, it was recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis in 1955. And then, in January of 1968, Cash would go on to record a live version of the song from Folsom Prison itself. It was later released on Cash’s At Folsom Prison album, the most successful album of his entire career.
Featuring “Folsom Prison Blues,” “The Long Black Veil,” “Cocaine Blues,” “Greystone Chapel” and more, the album sold nearly 4 million copies.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Jelly Roll has surprised folks with a cover of the Johnny Cash hit.
A while back, he put on a concert for inmates at the Nashville-area prison he was once incarcerated at, himself.
Joined by Brantley Gilbert and Struggle Jennings (step-grandson of Waylon), they visited inmates in Jelly Roll’s old cell block, and while they were there, in a second video, Jelly hopped on the mic:

It’s no surprise that the inmates were fired up, and you have to appreciate Jelly Roll’s dedication to the prison system. He’s living proof that it’s never too late to turn your life around, a message he has continued to deliver time and time again.
Respect.
@againstthegrain_ent The stuff Jellyroll does for his community is insane. A true inspiration, honestly. #jellyroll #sonofasinner #nashville #acal #creeksquad #countryrap ♬ Stuck In The Middle – Tai Verdes
