Last month, we learned the devastating news that pro hockey player Adam Johnson had passed away in a tragic on-ice accident during a game where his team, the Nottingham Panthers, were playing the Sheffield Steelers in an Elite Ice Hockey League game in England.

Steelers player Matt Petgrave cut fatally Johnson’s throat with his skate in an on-ice collision. He was only 29.

Here’s a clip of the collision, without the heartbreaking and gut-wrenching aftermath:

I can’t imagine the heartbreak his family, friends, and loved ones are going through, as the whole situation was completely shocking and unexpected. Johnson’s girlfriend, Ryan Wolf, took to Instagram to share a heartbreaking message regarding her late boyfriend:

“My sweet angel. I’ll miss you forever and love you always.”

With that being said, we’re learning even more heartbreaking news about the situation.

According to USA Today, Johnson was planning on proposing to his girlfriend of three years, Ryan Wolfe. Johnson had reportedly bought an engagement ring before the couple flew out to England for the upcoming hockey season.

Wolfe discovered the ring in their apartment following the hockey player’s death, and the family had revealed the news to her.

Johnson’s aunt, Kari, told SWNS:

“We were all really excited because we were really looking forward to their future and he didn’t get a chance to ask her, and then this happened.”

During Johnson’s funeral, Wolfe delivered a heartbreaking eulogy, saying:

“To me, you were my everything. You were my home, my best friend, my sounding board, my rock, my safe haven and the love of my life. I’m never going to stop thinking about you, missing you and loving you until we can be together again. I love you.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Johnson’s family and friends as they continue through this difficult time.

Matt Petgrave, the player responsible for the errant skate, has since been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
