New music Friday just got a whole lot better.

Mike and the Moonpies just announced that they’re dropping a live album tomorrow, officially titled Live from the Devil’s Backbone.

Recorded on May 20th, 2022, the band taped a live recording of their show at the historic Devil’s Backbone Tavern in Fischer, Texas, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country.

It’s marks second live album for Mike and the Moonpies, following 2016’s Live at the Winstar World Casino and Resort, and will include songs from albums like 2018’s Steak Night at the Prairie Rose, 2019’s Cheap Silver and Solid Country Gold and more.

Frontman Mike Harmeier says they chose this specific tavern because it’s become a special place of celebration for the band when they record at yellow DOG studios:

“When we’re working on recording at yellow DOG, we’ll go there for nightcaps and then after the album wraps to celebrate.

So we’re very connected to The Devil’s Backbone. It’s like family there.”

The history of Devil’s Backbone Tavern actually dates back to the late 1890’s, when the first stone room was built for a blacksmith’s shop and a stagecoach stop at the base of a treacherous trail of the Devil’s Backbone, a ruggedly scenic area which resulted from an earthquake.

Just after Prohibition, the tavern was added next to the blacksmith shop, located just beyond the “dry county” of Hays County in 1937. By the 1980s, the tavern had become a favorite locale for singer-songwriters, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Mike added that he believes Devil’s Backbone Tavern deserves to be as iconic as Luckenbach or Gruene Hall, with the rich music history that has lived within its walls, which is why they chose to record the live album there.
