Not gonna lie, I’m jealous of this guy.
When it comes to the most overplayed songs of the past decade, “Wagon Wheel” has to be near the top of the list, right alongside “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Sweet Caroline.”
Now, don’t get me wrong: I was a fan of “Wagon Wheel” when I first discovered the original from Old Crow Medicine Show. I didn’t even hate the Darius Rucker version when it first came out.
But then, somehow we as a society decided that “Wagon Wheel” was going to be the song of the decade and play it quite literally everywhere we go. From the radio to jukeboxes to karaoke and piano bars, there’s really nowhere to escape if you’re sick of hearing the song…and man am I sick of hearing it.
My first article for Whiskey Riff was even one begging people to please stop playing “Wagon Wheel” way back in 2018, so as you can imagine, my feelings on the song haven’t gotten any better after all these years considering it’s still f*cking EVERYWHERE.
Please, just give it a rest. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? Well there’s no way to miss “Wagon Wheel” because it won’t f*cking go away.
But somehow, despite the song pervading every aspect of our lives over the last decade or so, apparently this guy heard it for the first time at a Nashville bar and liked it so much that he was trying to use the Shazam app to figure out the name of the song.
Now, let’s get something out of the way: Shazam doesn’t work on live performances. (If you’re not familiar with the app, you can open it and it will tell you what song is playing – but only for recorded music).
The most amazing thing about it, though, is that somehow this guy has made it all this time without hearing “Wagon Wheel.” What’s his secret? Which rock is he living under, and does he have room for one more? Or did this guy just wake up from a 20-year coma? How is it possible, in the year of our Lord 2024, to not know “Wagon Wheel?”
Well obviously his app came up empty, so hopefully he found another way to get the answer he was looking for. (Just Google the lyrics, my guy).
But unfortunately, after hearing it for the first time, this guy’s life will never be the same.
Buckle up buddy, because you’re in for a long, annoying ride with “Wagon Wheel” playing at every turn.
