Nothing like a good drinking song, and no better time to drop one than right before St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
Luke Grimes is giving fans another single from his upcoming sophomore record, Redbird, coming two years after the release of his self-titled debut record.
And if you’re scratching your head trying to figure out why Grimes looks so familiar, you might better recognize Grimes as Kayce Dutton. Unlike many country music stars who are crossing over into acting, Grimes is doing the opposite, breaking into country music after establishing his acting career.
Redbird is set for release on April 3, and once again, the 10-track project was produced by Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb. Grimes says making the record was a “cathartic experience in many ways,” calling it a “deeply personal” project:
“‘Making Redbird’ was a cathartic experience in many ways. Sometimes the highs and lows of life are too much to express with words, so song becomes necessary. As deeply personal as it is, the themes are simple and universal: love, loss, and learning along the way.”
It looks like Dave Cobb, Jessie Jo Dillon and Grimes wrote almost the entire album together, which is a great sign because they’re incredibly talented musicians and writers. It was recorded primarily at Georgia May Studio in Savannah and Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A.
In addition to writing, Grimes contributed his acoustic guitar, percussion, and drum-playing talents throughout the sessions, and it once again promises to lean into his love for more traditional country, which inspires his love for music. Of course, he’s got a lot going on this Spring already, as the Yellowstone spinoff he’s starring in for CBS, Marshals.
Grimes has already shared two songs from the record, “Love You Now,” and “Haunted,” and today, March 13, he’s sharing a third single with fans, “Drink Drink Drink.” The song has a much more upbeat tempo than his two previous singles, sharing an anthemic drinking song.
The title of this tune pretty much discloses what it’s about, eh? However, this pub chant tune has a somber note as Grimes sings of drinking in honor of loved ones we have lost, both romantically or physically.
“Well, I know you wouldn’t want me

So, I’m gonna keep on drinkin’
Until the day I die
So let’s drink, drink, drink
Get a little stoned
Let’s pour one out
For them boys that ain’t comin’ home”
Sonically, this song belongs in an Irish pub. I can imagine folks swaying back and forth, sloshing beer on each other as they sing the lyrics of this tune. The melody follows in the footsteps of other iconic Irish drinking songs, making this song perfect to release ahead of St. Patrick’s Day.
