Morgan Wallen Finds Forgiveness In Emotional New Song, “Don’t Think Jesus”

A good Friday indeed…

With new tunes from Kaitlin Butts, American Aquarium, 49 Winchester, Kolby Cooper and more, there’s a whole lot to get excited about this weekend.

But this new Morgan Wallen tune might just be the most meaningful song he’s ever released.

Titled “Don’t Think Jesus,” it was written by Chase McGill, Jessi Alexander and Mark Holman with Morgan in mind, and Morgan said it immediately brought him to tears upon hearing it:

“Some of my friends sent me a song today, I was on the way back home from playing a little golf, and they wrote this song with me in on their mind and made me cry in the truck.”

With a subtle nod to Waylon Jennings’ “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way,” it tells the all too familiar story of a young rock star living fast and wild until the wheels fall off.

If you know anything about Morgan Wallen’s life in the past couple years, it’s not hard to see the parallels…

Full of regret and shame, at the end of his rope, our down and out rock star cries out to Jesus and, rather than the scorn and abandon that he deserves (and gets from the rest of the world), he’s met with grace and forgiveness because… Jesus doesn’t do it that way.

Here’s a look at the chorus:

“If I was him I’d say to hell with you,
ain’t no helping you,
find someone else to give Heaven to,
I’m telling you,
I’d shame me, I blame me,
I’d make me pay for my mistakes,
Oh, but I don’t think Jesus does it that way.”

Needless to say, it’s a special song for Morgan.

“This is such a real and special song for me. Thank you to my friends Jessi Alexander Chase McGill and Mark Holman for writing this for me.

You guys told a story that so many of us have lived and continue to live. I hope this speaks to y’all like it speaks to me.”

And with its Gospel message, a fitting one for Easter weekend.
