We’re back at it with the next installment of my “Best of 2026 so far” series, and today we are getting into the heavy artillery. Over the last few weeks, we’ve covered my top picks for spinning reels, baitcaster reels, and finesse spinning rods. But if you’re anything like me, you know that baitcasting rods are the true workhorses of your boat deck.
As a reminder for anyone new here: I test out a ton of gear every single season across all price points. So far this year, I’ve had my hands on roughly 30 different rod and reel combos. No sponsors, no paid-for reviews, just hundreds of hours on the water, thousands of casts, and my honest, unfiltered opinions. Whether you’re frog-fishing thick slop, burning a Chatterbait, or dragging a heavy football jig, these are the casting rods that have consistently outperformed the rest in 2026.
Here are my top 5… so far:
Abu Garcia Beast
Aptly named… this thing is a beast. Designed for throwing big swimbaits and glide baits in both freshwater and saltwater, these rods can handle anything that you throw at them. I have a 7’5″ for my harness swimbaits like the Megabass Magdraft or Berkley Cullshad, and then I have a 7’9″ Beast for bigger glide baits like the 8-inch Berkley Chop Block. Pair it up with the Abu Garcia Beast reel and you have yourself a deadly combo.
And if you don’t fish big baits like this… try it. I promise you, small bass will bite it too. There are only a few bites that can be more fun…

Fenwick Elite
My do-everything rod. I’ve become a HUGE Fenwick fan in the past couple years, and find myself regularly picking one up. They have undertaken a comprehensive redesign of their entire rod lineup (with a former G. Loomis builder if I’m not mistaken), introducing four distinct series: Eagle, HMG, Elite, and the flagship World Class. I own them all, use them all, but the Elite class is just phenomenal at the price point, and even if you’re not fishing for bass, they have a rod for you. They also just looks SO clean.
When I’m dobbin’ a Texas rig, flipping a jig, or punching a mat, it’s a Fenwick Elite in my hand. My favorite is the 7’3″ medium-heavy… it’s a workhorse.

Daiwa Tatula Elite
I love the Tatula Elite line from Daiwa, and if the price tag is a little too much for you, even just the regular Tatula line is fantastic. But the Tatula Elite rods are crafted with input from elite Daiwa pros like Seth Feider, Takahiro Omori, Patrick Walters, Chris and Cory Johnston, Brent Ehrler and more. These rods are optimized for various bass fishing techniques, such as flipping, cranking, and various finesse applications.
And at less than $200 a rod, that’s a really solid price point. Personally, I have the Randy Howell dock skipping/swim jig rod ready to go at all times, but the Feider jerkbait rod is also solid, and the Brent Ehrler multi-purpose and Chatterbait rods are tough to beat.

Shimano SLX A
The Shimano SLX line is arguably the pinnacle of where affordability meets quality in the bass fishing world. Their SLX A 150 casting reel is also arguably the pinnacle of baitcasting reels at the $115 price tag, but we’ll save reel talk for another day. For 100 bucks, you’re getting a fantastic rod that can hang with rods well above its price point. The 7′ MH Fast SLX A is a go-to for me, and I also have a 7′ ML Extra Fast SLX A spinning rod rigged up at all times. It’s TOUGH to beat.

St. Croix Bass X
As a Wisconsin resident, I’m fairly partial to St. Croix, and use a number of rods across various lines, but the Bass X is a great place to start. A relatively low price point from St. Croix, but one that offers a ton of options and versatility. Since they’re a little more affordable, I generally use the Bass X line for moving baits where sensitivity isn’t paramount. I love the 7’4″ Chatterbait rod (I have two of them) as well as the 6’8″ jerkbait rod.
And one of the great things about St. Croix is that actions stay pretty consistent across all of their lines, and you can find a TON of rods in each line. Whatever kind of rod you’re looking for, they have one dialed in for that specific purpose. And with their warranty system, you can basically just pay a small fee to get yours replaced, or skip the fee and just pay the difference to upgrade to the next rod line (which in many cases can be cheaper than the replacement fee of your old rod). So not only do you get a new one, you get a better one with the same exact action.
