The trash can might be “bear proofed,” but is it “CPR proofed?”
Bears are notorious for finding food wherever any crumb is left available. That’s why most trash receptacles in “bear country” are “bear-proofed,” and also why we’ve seen these bumbling creatures literally walk off with entire garbage cans (and even dumpsters).
Though the trash cans are built to keep bears from getting into them, their construction is naturally going to frustrate the wild animals that attempt to crack them open. That’s exactly what happened in this video out of Alaska. A big ol’ bear found itself a blue trash can and evidently knew that something good (at least for it) was being stored inside.
The only problem? It couldn’t get the dang thing open.
And in the bear’s effort to access the contents of the trash receptacle, it created quite the comical visual. A homeowner in Alaska (and the presumed owner of the garbage can) got their phone out to video the bear as it tried to get into the trash. The method of trash-can-opening the wild animal was going with looked oddly similar to the life-saving technique known as CPR.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation has the power to bring someone back to life. Is it as affective for opening trash cans? You’ll see for yourself in the video below. Often times, when CPR is being taught, they say that the person deploying the life-saving chest compressions should keep the rhythm of “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees.
From what I can tell, this bear is right on tempo.
Unfortunately, the bear wasn’t needing to breathe life into the trash can… it needed to get the thing open. That didn’t work out all that well for the wild animal, but it did make for a hilarious video. It was clearly giving its all and pushing on the side of the garbage can with all of its might. However, this time around, it was a garbage can’t.
Check it out:
Poor guy got all flustered and then just walked right off.
That or the dog barking inside the house bothered it enough to abandon the mission. Though the bear might not have gotten any food from the trash, it did get to be the star of a now viral video. Does the wild animal care about that? Not in the slightest. But we humans do, and those on social media had a great time commenting on the clip of the bear trying to crack the code of the bear-proofing by appearing to give it CPR:
“Great video to share how durable and sturdy the cans are.”
“It’s okay guys, he’s training to pass his CPR exam.”
“He’s gonna be so disappointed when he realizes it’s the recycling bin.”
“This should be an ad for the trash companies selling bear proof containers.”
“I’m making him my emergency contact.”
Don’t think that’s the smartest thing you could do… but if the bear did happen to mistake you for a trash can, I’ve got confidence that he could keep the “Stayin’ Alive” rhythm and successfully resuscitate.
