Fair enough, honestly.
Over the weekend, Morgan Wallen was in Miami for two stops on his I’m The Problem stadium tour, and the second night featured included Gavin Adcock along with the legendary Brooks & Dunn to kick things off.
As he often does, Morgan invited his opening acts out to join him during his headlining set, Morgan brought Brooks & Dunn to the stage to perform with him on one of his biggest hits, “Whiskey Glasses,” but Ronnie needed a little help remembering the lyrics…
He pulled a little piece of paper out of his pocket while onstage, which had the lyrics to the song written on it, and the videos went mega viral:
@daytonabeachstyle Oh no no no- Not Brooks and Dunn reading the lines to Whiskey Glasses 👓 😭 #morganwallen #miami ♬ original sound – DaytonaBeachStyle
From the clips, it doesn’t appear that neither he nor Kix Brooks were actually singing along that much, but they did improvise a little bit and add their own flare to the song. I don’t think the cheat sheet really helped all that much, which makes the whole scenario that much funnier:
@concertsliveonfilm @Brooks & Dunn are absolute icons but they did not know the lyrics😂 #brooksanddunn #morganwallen #whiskeyglasses #imtheproblem #imtheproblemtour #fyp #foryoupage #miami #florida #follow #country #countryconcert #concert ♬ original sound – Ashley
It’s probably safe to say that this was probably a last minute decision to have them out there and not something that they had a chance to rehearse. And honestly, they’re Brooks & Dunn, two absolute legends, so I don’t really care what they do at this point. If they just want to walk around the stage, that’s more than enough and they’ve earned the right to do it that way if they so please.
And in his defense, Ronnie’s not the only opener who needed a cheat sheet to remember the lyrics when called up to duet with Morgan.
A couple weekends back, Ella Langley opened for Morgan in Wisconsin, and during his headlining set he brought her back out to help with one of his fan-favorite songs “What I Want.” The album version features Canadian pop star Tate McRae from his monster 37-song album I’m The Problem. The record has dominated the charts and remained at #1 on the Hot 100 weeks since it has been out, and it also debuted at the top of the all-genre Billboard 200 album chart.
Several of Morgan’s friends are featured on collaborations, but it’s his first ever duet with a female artist that has been the early runaway hit, landing on the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 chart upon debut (which consists of singles, rather than the album as a whole). Morgan had six songs from the record debut within the top 10, and “What I Want” is Morgan’s fourth Hot 100 chart topper and McRae’s first (though some of her fans didn’t seem too thrilled about it).
Well with Ella getting the call up to help out on the duet on tour, apparently she wanted to make sure she nailed it on the big stage – and didn’t forget the words.
Ella shared a funny video on social media of herself writing the lyrics on her hand before taking the stage, just to make sure she had some notes to reference in case she froze in front of the crowd:

Can’t really blame her for wanting a cheat sheet just in case. That’s a lot of people, and Morgan’s fans are hardcore. Not to mention it’s the #1 song in the country right now, so you want to make sure you nail it during your big moment.
But it’s a little bit different when it comes two an already-established, legendary duo like Brooks & Dunn, who definitely get a little more leeway with something like this, and rightfully so. They’ve earned it, but the story about Ronnie still went viral, and he posted a hilarious response to it all on his Instagram page, joking that he’s “still learning ‘Neon Moon'” and so we should all have a little extra patience when it comes to him singing someone else’s song.
He also said he loves “Whiskey Glasses,” so maybe he’ll add it to his playlist and be better prepared for next time:
“Hell, I’m still learnin’ NEON MOON :) Love ‘WHISKEY GLASSES’… be patient… RD.”
In the video below, you see Ronnie walking to the stage, telling the camera:
“I’m going to sing a Morgan Wallen song that I don’t know. But, look at this. If I can read it, we’ll be okay.”
It seems as though they might should’ve made the font a little bit bigger, but it made for a very memorable moment onstage, and like I said, it’s Brooks & Dunn and I don’t think anyone really cared at all.
Maybe next time they should just team up for a song that Ronnie might know a little bit better…
“Neon Moon (with Morgan Wallen)”
