“How Is This Even Possible?” – Headless Fish Still Swimming Around Has Social Media Stumped

We can now substitute the phrase “running around like a chicken with its head cut off” with “swimming around like a headless fish.” There’s video proof that it is possible.

It’s truly wild to see, and it doesn’t make all that much sense. That’s why social media has been stumped at the sight of a video showing a fish still swimming around without a head. If you’re like me, you’ll watch the clip and ask, “How on God’s green Earth is that possible?”

Well, it apparently comes down to the fish’s spinal cord, which actually controls most of the movement for a fish. The gilled creatures can’t live long without a head (due to the head and gills being its main source of oxygen), but for quite some time, the nerves in the spine of the fish can keep it swimming along.

Nerve cells can continue to guide the fish, even if it doesn’t have a head or brain to control where it wants to go. That’s likely the explanation behind this “zombie fish” sighting, and from the looks of the end of the video, the nerve guidance didn’t last long. A larger predator must have just chomped off the front part of the fish, and this person was in the right place at the right time to get it on video.

Check it out:

You can go ahead and file that under “wildest things I’ve seen.” It’s almost eerie watching that, isn’t it? Social media users certainly thought so, and left their commentary on the clip in the reply section below the post:
