Taking it back to 2022 when Lynyrd Skynyrd tore up the Ryman.
This show was memorable not only because it was held in the Mother Church of country music but also because it was one of the last shows filmed with Gary Rossington before he passed.
Throughout the night, the Skynyrd boys brought out quite a few big-name guests. but one who stepped on that stage ready to shred was Marcus King. And what better song to highlight Marcus King’s talent than “Saturday Night Special.”
Lead singer Johnny Van Zant introduced King to the Ryman crowd:
“Y’all give it up for Marcus King. How about it, baby? Right here.”
The group wastes no time getting into the track, and from the first guitar riffs, King faces Rossington as they both quickly glide their fingers on the necks of their guitars to flawlessly deliver the complex chord sequences.
After Van Zant sings the first few lines, King jumps in letting it roar through the microphone, while Van Zant and King sing the chorus harmoniously.
King’s bluesy vocals mesh well with Van Zant, adding a new flair to the classic rock track. After the two sing, the rest of the band lets it rip throughout their parts, and the band jams together.
During the bridge, Lynyrd Skynyrd lets their guest take center stage, and Marcus King shows the crowd what he does best. He lays down the most insane guitar solo and barely breaks a sweat as his fingers frantically play the guitar.
The whole performance is electric.
Maybe Marcus King is a long-lost member of Lynyrd Skynyrd; he seems to fit in perfectly with the group on stage.
