Ok, can’t say I saw this one coming.

Over the years, networks have turned to some pretty iconic songs to kick off their football coverage. For years, Hank Williams Jr. served as the intro to Monday Night Football with his classic “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight.”

And of course there’s Big & Rich’s “Comin’ To Your City,” which has been the theme song for College GameDay for 16 years now (though their version of the song was recently replaced with a new version featuring Lainey Wilson, Darius Rucker and the Cadillac Three).

But since ESPN stopped using Hank Jr.’s hit song for its Monday Night Football theme, the program hasn’t really been able to find an iconic song that’s stuck around for more than a season or two.

Well it seems like they’re trying yet another new song this year – and this one has my attention.

Chris Stapleton teased a cover of “In The Air Tonight,” the classic song by Phil Collins from his 1981 debut album Face Value, that he recorded with Snoop Dogg and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana to serve as this year’s Monday Night Football anthem.

The new theme is set to premiere tonight on ESPN ahead of the matchup between the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers, and will serve as the network’s Monday Night Football anthem all season long.

As if I didn’t already have enough reason to tune in tonight…
