Tanner Usrey has been catching fire lately, and it seems like he’ll just blow up any day now.

The Texas troubadour best known for his songs “Come Back Down” and “Beautiful Lies” has been releasing singles steadily since last November, and today he dropped his fifth single “Who I Am.”

Now, I could be wrong here, but with five spectacular singles dropping in a span of nine months, it seems like there could be a bigger project at play here from Usrey. But until we hear one way or the other on that, I’m perfectly content with the spectacular singles he’s been dropping.

The latest of these, “Who I Am” is a self-deprecating acknowledgement of one’s own pitfalls and how difficult life on the road can be as it pertains to maintaining relationships and the best version of oneself. For some reason, though, it seems to me to have a hint of positivity to it, encouraging everyone to be comfortable in their own skin and accept the fact that nobody, or no situation, is perfect.

Tanner says:

“This song is an anthem to anyone who has felt trapped in a cycle of self destruction. Living on the run, never being able to slow down, and being seen as someone else by people around you.

I think a lot of people can relate to that message.”

One’s thing for sure… the song rips. The gritty southern rock meets red dirt instrumentation and sound that has become synonymous with the Tanner Usrey name is in full effect here, and this one fits perfectly within his growing catalog. Listen to “Who I Am” here.

“Feels like I’m going insane
Every town it looks the same
I’m sick of hearing my last name
It’s just who I am I guess

And I told you baby from the start how this would end
Goodbye kiss in the middle of the road
Knowing damn well we ain’t friends
I took all you had and there’s nothing left
That’s just who I am I guess
That’s just who I am I guess
Self destruction at best…”

Usrey has a ton of momentum behind his music right now, and it is the perfect time for him to be releasing singles like this. With fans old and new latching on to each and everyone, as he continues to play larger shows, both headlining and opening for some of the scene’s biggest acts, Tanner Usrey is a name you’re really going to want to look out for in the next year or so.

This guy is a superstar, and it’s just a matter of time before the fans and industry see him as one.

If you haven’t heard any of his other singles over the last several months, check those out below.

“Last Goodbye”

“Give it Some Time”

“Take Me Home”

“Pick Up Your Phone”

Go out and catch a Usrey live, too, if you can. While I haven’t had the opportunity to do so yet, I’ve heard his live show is a high energy masterpiece, and I can’t wait to see it for myself some time.

The Turnpike Troubadours just announced Usrey as support for their new show in Knoxville, TN this November, and he’s got a good run of other opening and headlining shows left for the remainder of the year.

Give his schedule a look to see if he and his band are coming to a city near you.
