Whiskey Riff Song Of The Week: “Houston County Sky” By Whiskey Myers

Happy Monday, y’all.

Today for the Song of the Week, we have a tune called “Houston County Sky” by Whiskey Myers.

As they gear up to release their 6th studio album Tornillo next Friday, I wanted to take it back to their 2019 self-titled record and a deep cut that I still listen to all the time, even three years later.

“Houston County Sky” is a solo write by frontman Cody Cannon, as he details a relationship and how life hasn’t exactly worked out the way he’d imagined, but finds peace most days in the fact that he can still sit out under a Houston County sky and drink the night away.

Though he might not’ve gotten to this point in his life exactly by way of following the straight and narrow, as he notes in the lyrics, things often have a wild way of working themselves out:

“ain’t it funny how it all works out…”

It’s also easy on the ears with an infectious melody and solid lyrics (per the usual with them), and it really is one of those feel-good songs that never gets old no matter how many times I’ve heard it. And aren’t those the best kinds of songs?

I know we’re all chomping at the bit for all the great new stuff on Tornillo, but this is an all-time classic Whiskey Myers track to me:

And I mean, you simply cannot beat the live acoustic version of any song Cody sings…

I’ve always hoped one day they’d release an acoustic album of even just their older, fan-favorite songs, and if you watch this video, you’ll understand why:
