88-Year Old Nashville Woman Thwarts Robbery At Liquor Store, Charged With Aggravated Assault

A pair of thieves probably thought they had found an easy target when they tried to rob 88-year old May Boyce’s liquor store in Nashville last week.

They were wrong.

According to the New York Post, Boyce, the owner of Murfreesboro Road Liquor and Wines, says she’s been robbed several times in the past few years. In fact, she still wears a wrist brace from being robbed and assaulted at her store just a couple of months ago. So when two guys came into her shop last week and tried to make a run for the door with whiskey bottles under their arms, Boyce decided she had had enough.

“I did what I had to do… After you’ve been played for a fool by people stealin’ from you for years, you get fed up. And don’t put me in the category of a little old lady. I know how to take care of myself.”

The 5’3”, 115-lb liquor store owner who works in her store 6 days a week grabbed her late mother’s .38 Smith & Wesson. Despite having never shot a gun before, Boyce took aim after she claims the thief lunged at her and headed for the exit. And while Boyce says that she was aiming at the floor just to scare him, the thief fell to the ground from a shot to the back – and knocked over a display of wine in the process.

“I never shot a gun before… but I guess it’s something that comes natural. I aimed at the floor to scare him.”

When police showed up, Boyce volunteered to go the police station where she was charged with aggravated assault, according to the Nashville police – and then went right back to her store to clean up all that wine.

“I went down, got my mugshot taken, got out on bond and came right back to the store. I got some people to help me but it took us to 1 AM to clean up all the wine that spilled everywhere.”

Holy shit. This woman has ice in her veins and I love it. She just got robbed, accidentally shot a man and was arrested, and all she’s worried about is cleaning up the wine that was spilled in the process. What a badass.

The alleged thief has since been identified and he admitted to being high on cocaine and alcohol at the time of the robbery, as well as admitting that he had planned on stealing the liquor. He changed his story the next day when police questioned him again at the hospital. He is recovering from his gunshot wound.

I’m willing to bet that if he decides to try again, he’s going to pick a different store next time.

And as for Boyce? Well, she hopes that word gets out on the street that she’s fed up and isn’t going to take it anymore. But she’s also upset that it might be two years before she gets her gun back.

“I told em, shit, I might be dead by then.”

May Boyce. What a legend.

I know where I’m buying all of my liquor from now on – and you can bet I’m not going to try to walk out without paying for it first. Because this granny fights back.
