A couple weeks ago, Kacey Musgraves kicked off her Middle of Nowhere Tour with quite a statement… she debuted a stage prop at the United Center in Chicago that gives the traditional disco ball a completely new meaning. Kacey rode around on a set of disco balls during her performance of “Rhinestoned.”
She joked with the crowd that:
“This is what it looks like when no one tells me no.”

I’m sure there are plenty of people who will not enjoy that one bit, but no one more so than Kacey’s Nana. Kacey has talked before about how her grandma was not a fan of her song “Dry Spell,” just one of many songs on the new album with sexual innuendo, especially one line in particular:
“I’ve never talked about self-pleasure before. So that’s a first for me: ‘Sitting on the washing machine.’ It’s not my grandma’s favorite line, but it’s mine, I guess.”
Of course, you’ll remember Kacey’s very popular reference to her grandma on her 2018 song “Slow Burn,” where she sings about her “grandma cried when I pierced my nose.”
Thankfully, Nana hasn’t seen the video for “Dry Spell” yet, and I think that’s probably for the best… Kacey holds up an eggplant just to start it off if that gives you any indication of what it’s like. Kacey explained that while they were actually filming the video, she got a text that her grandma had been rushed to the hospital, and she was on the phone crying, saying that if her Nana lived, she was going to “hate” the video:
“I don’t know if she’ll laugh. Actually, in the middle of filming the video, I got a text from my dad that Nana had to be rushed to the hospital: She had a really scary extreme high blood pressure incident. So I had to leave and I was on the call, crying, like, ‘If Nana lives, she’s gonna hate this video!’”
Luckily Nana is doing fine, and I would have paid good money to see her reaction to the disco balls Kacey had as part of her set last night.
She told one crowd recently that her grandma was there, and she always told her that if she was going to do anything, she needed to do it “big… and sparkly,” though obviously, I think this is a far cry from what she had in mind:
“It takes a lot of balls to get up here and do what I do every night. It takes two gigantic, anatomically correct sparkly balls.I’ve actually got my Nana in the house tonight, and she always told me, ‘Honey, if you’re gonna do something, do it big, do it sparkly.’ Nana is this what you had in mind?”
Poor nana…

But that isn’t where the conversation around this new prop ended.
Kacey shared a carousel of photos from her shows this weekend, and there was a photo of her with the disco ball in the background, and a fan left a comment that they just couldn’t get behind it:
“I can’t get behind the large testicles I’m sorry.”
I’ll be honest, I’m no prude, and I do think it’s kind of funny, but it’s also something I would never ever do if I was designing a concert set. But this is Kacey’s show, and Middle of Nowhere is full of sexual innuendo so it’s really not all that surprising.
But in typical Kacey fashion, she had quite the comeback for them… rather on brand given the aforementioned innuendo:
“Well, maybe you can get in front of them.”

During her show in Boston on this weekend’s run, part of her stage lighting caught on fire, and she had another hilarious response to that too, telling the crowd:
“That looks bad. Genuinely, something’s on fire. I have way too much hairspray to be standing under that s***. I only like pyro when I know what’s gonna happen. Does anyone have a bedazzled fire extinguisher? It’s doing more things… anyway, here’s Wonderwall.”
Classic…

And to the fan who didn’t like the disco ball, you probably won’t like either one of these music videos very much, either…
