Have you ever heard the deep bellow of the American Alligator? Well, you can go ahead and add the sound to the list of things you hopefully never hear.
I might be jumping to conclusions there. Maybe you (the reader) are into close encounters with alligators and you wouldn’t mind to witness the low and unmistakable bellow of an American Alligator. It seems a little niche if you do find yourself in that category, but more power to you I guess…
This footage, which was originally shared by the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Austwell, Texas, is truly remarkable. The fact that it was captured on video is pretty impressive too, just because I’m assuming that alligators don’t go around and do this all day long. They actually save it primarily for attracting mates, and letting other gators know that they’ve claimed the territory.
The sound that the gator lets out in this clip is admittedly a little scary. It’s also crazy to know that they are able to produce this noise without having vocals cords. If you hadn’t ever seen the video and you closed your eyes and listened to this, what would you think it was? For me, I think it sounds like any of these things below:
-An old car stalling
-A Grizzly Bear with a stomach ache
-A four wheeler with a partially blocked muffler (I really like this option)
And I still can’t get over the power of the deep growl from the gator actually send out ripples in the water due to the vibrations emitting from its body. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen or heard anything like it actually, and the US Department of Interior (courtesy of the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge) provided some interesting insight about the alligator and how and why it produces that noise:
“You might want to turn your volume up for this one. That’s the unmistakable bellow of an American alligator. During the breeding season, male alligators produce these deep, booming calls to announce their presence, attract females, and let rivals know who’s occupying the territory.”
Sheesh… I hope I’m never within 100 yards of an alligator doing that.
Everyone else that came across the video was in agreement. Social media users in the comments could hardly believe what they were hearing, leaving replies below the video saying:
I don’t normally fear gators, but this sound means breeding season and DANGER!

Take it as a warning that you’re too close.
