Mark it down: On March 10th, the left finally found some government spending they don’t like. But getting outraged over steak and lobster for our troops seems like a weird hill to die on…
That’s the situation we find ourselves in today following a report that the Pentagon and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth spent $6.9 million on lobster tail, $15.1 million on ribeye steak, and $2 million on Alaskan king crab in one month.
Now, the dishonest headlines imply that Hegseth himself is simply eating like a king on the taxpayer’s dime. And that’s the narrative that Democrats like California Governor Gavin Newsom are apparently choosing to run with too:
And even late night Democrat mouthpiece Jimmy Kimmel took a shot at the food bill:
“What is this? ‘My 600 Pound Defense Department?’ How are they eating so much food? Can you imagine the size of the egg Sean Hannity would lay if a Democrat had spent millions of dollars on lobster tails and sushi preparation tables? He would never walk again.”
The problem though, is that the purchases were to feed our military members. As many have pointed out, steak and lobster before a deployment is a longstanding tradition for our men and women who sign up to serve our country:
According to an article from military.com:
“Deployed dining operations have long included occasional premium meals as a morale measure. Larger bases and ships may serve steak or seafood during holidays, commemorations, or after intensive mission cycles. These meals can carry emotional and symbolic weight because they contrast sharply with routine field rations or austere dining conditions.
Food remains a key component of readiness and morale, with commanders and contractors using special meals to maintain psychological resilience during deployments.”
Of course there was another reason for the September 2025 spending spree: It was the end of the fiscal year, which means the Pentagon was faced with a “use it or lose it” scenario with their remaining budget. But somehow, using it to give our troops steak and lobster is controversial?
Now, everybody who’s criticizing the expenditure knows the truth and that the money is being used on special meals for our troops. But in our hyper-politicized culture, you can’t let the facts get in the way of your narrative.
And as many people pointed out, these are the same people who are fine with millions of dollars going to the “Quality Learing Center” in Minnesota…
Now, if there’s really a scandal in all this, it’s that it appears the Pentagon doesn’t have anybody on staff who knows how to properly cook a steak…
But I digress.
It’s a stupid controversy being driven by dishonest politicians and media who are just looking to take a cheap shot at Pete Hegseth. But the reality is, if our government wants to spend tax dollars to give our troops a nice meal, that’s one of the less egregious expenditures that we’ll see from the folks in charge.
But then again, every dollar spent on steak and lobster for our troops is a dollar that can’t be spent on Sesame Street in Iraq or creating LGBTQ+ comic books in Peru.
Priorities, am I right?
