“It Affects The Work”: Luke Grimes Says He Doesn’t Watch Himself As Kayce Dutton In ‘Yellowstone’ Or ‘Marshals’

Luke Grimes Kayce Dutton
Y: Marshals

Luke Grimes has been playing Kayce Dutton for close to a decade… and he’s never once watched his Yellowstone character on screen.

That’s at least how it seems according to a recent interview with Hey U Guys, where the Marshals star sat down and talked about the latest Yellowstone spinoff. The Kayce Dutton-focused series is already nine episodes into it’s first season on CBS, which will consist of 13 episodes in total. Reviews for the show have been mixed, but there’s no doubt that it’s putting up numbers.

It’s already done enough to warrant a Season 2 renewal.

Luke Grimes has been doing a lot of press to promote the show as the first season of his spinoff comes to a close. And in a recent conversation, he revealed that there’s one thing he simply can’t do in his acting career. The actor behind Kayce Dutton was asked if he ever makes an evening of sitting down and watching himself on TV, especially for finale episodes, and Grimes responded with this:

“I know this is sort of like a sh*tty answer, but I don’t watch myself. So no, I don’t. I won’t watch it. Not because I’m too cool to. I get really self conscious and then I feel like it affects the work.”

That’s a very different approach to watching yourself on TV than Grimes’ Marshals co-star, Riley Green, has. The country music star said that he watched his episodes back and treated it like how a football player would watch film. Which makes sense… but I’m sure some of you reading this probably hate listening to your own voice, and can relate more so to Grimes’ perspective.

The good news is that whatever Luke Grimes’ process is, it’s working. At this point, he’s very comfortable in Kayce’s shoes, and he revealed in the same interview that he’ll soon be stepping back into the role to start working on Season 2:

“They’re writing it right now and we start in about a month. We’ll start shooting back in Park City and we’ll shoot almost to the end of the year.”

CBS recently revealed some details about their primetime schedule for the 2026-2027 broadcast season, and guess which show was slotted within that schedule? You guessed it… Season 2 of Marshals. Though there’s not an official premiere date just yet, the Kayce Dutton-led series will return this fall. Since the show is ending in May, and networks generally start their fall schedule sometime in September, it’s possible that fans of the show will only go three or so months without seeing Kayce Dutton on their televisions.

The spinoff sequel is currently airing in the coveted Sunday at 8 E.S.T time slot on CBS, and that’s where it will remain when it returns later this year. New episodes of the show will air in that same time slot all the way through May until the season finale. And now, fans can take in the rest of Season 1 knowing that Kayce Dutton’s story will continue even after all 13 episodes of the first season have aired.
