Fearless House Cat Sends Black Bear Diving Over Backyard Fence In Canada

Bear and cat

This black bear in Canada really got chased up and out of the yard by a house cat.

You always hear about curiosity and cats… but what about courage? Sure, being brave could put some felines in tough spots, but in this video out of Quesnel, B.C., a house cat had the tenacity to chase a black bear up and over a fence. That’s the textbook definition (or at least the “see example”) of courage if I’ve ever seen it.

Cats have a stereotype for being lazy, and not caring about their owners. Those things could very well be true, though it doesn’t encompass all cats that are out there. Especially this one that apparently likes to chase big bears in its spare time. Forget guard dogs… this black and white cat is all you need to protect the house.

Just how it is with dogs, we have to remember that these cuddly pets we keep indoors had ancestors that fought for survival out in the wild. And our pets are still using that “fighting instinct,” just in different ways. Your dog might put up a battle for a specific seat on the couch, or your cat might start roaring throughout the house when you keep them waiting for their nightly meal.

It’s all the same really… just different.

Was this bear really fleeing because it was scared of a much smaller cat? Or was it maybe more confused than anything else, and decided to high tail it to safety after seeing the feline closing in? Who’s to say really, but it sure looks like the black bear didn’t want anything to do with this feline. After all, if something that small thinks it has a chance to take on a bear, it must be crazy enough to be right.

The viral video shows the black bear first getting a sense of its surroundings in the Canadian backyard. There’s a small playground set, a trampoline, and what looks to be a sandbox (that could use some TLC). As soon as the black bear gets comfortable, it hears something rustling behind it, and turns to see what mighty predator could be coming its way.

I’d guess the black bear was a bit surprised to see a house cat darting right towards it.

Even though the apex predator could have made short work of the much smaller creature, it got startled and began to flee. For a moment, it was cornered in the backyard by the porch, and once the black bear’s flight instinct kicked it, it high-tailed it away from the cat and towards a portion of the privacy fence.

In just a few seconds, the black bear had scaled the fence and jumped back into the wilderness… all while I imagine the brave black and white cat was standing tall somewhere in the backyard thinking, “Yeah, that’s right… and stay out.” It’s a true showcasing of bravery, and that it’s not the size of the cat in the fight, but rather the size of the fight in the cat.
