Kenny Chesney took to social media to let the world know that he’s lost another beloved pet: Poncho.
The country music superstar and gifted island-style-hit-maker is known for many different things. Whether it be for his countless No. 1 hits (like “Summertime” and “When The Sun Goes Down”), or being the leader of “No Shoes Nation,” the Knoxville native wears many different hats… and he’s always loved being a “Dog Dad.”
Chesney is a proud pet owner, and has shared his celebrity status with his furry friends throughout his career. Fans of Kenny first got to know his pit bull named Da Ruba Girl, which sadly passed away back in 2022. The country music singer penned a song in her honor, which is a real tear jerker if you a) haven’t ever heard it and b) call yourself a dog lover:
“Da Ruba Girl”
Unfortunately, Kenny Chesney just lost another one of the furry friends that he’s held close to his heart over the past decade.
The country music star started off his post by going all the way back to when his golden-doodle, Poncho, came into his life. Chesney felt as though the canine companion was guided to him at just the right time, and he felt like the luckiest dog owner in the world with Poncho by his side… and Poncho went everywhere with him:
“Fifteen years ago a friend showed up at my doorstep and said, ‘Here Kenny, you need to learn to attach to something.’ That’s the day Poncho entered my life. I’ve heard a dog enters your life when you need it most. And not just any dog, a specific dog just for you. To help you, to heal you, to show you how to accept unconditional love and give it back. Poncho did all that and more. He brought so much joy, energy, light, and fun into mine and Mary’s life. He was a constant companion, very curious, had swagger, and smarter than the average human.
He loved being on the boat, the bus, backstage with Jill and the production team. He loved the smell of the ocean and the islands like his dad and loved all the smells walking down the streets of Key West, Florida. One of his proudest moments was prancing on stage at Soldier Field in Chicago in 2024. I thought it would scare him but he loved feeling the energy of the crowd and refused to leave the stage. Instead of being timid, he was a show off a lot like me. That was a favorite moment in 15 years of favorite moments.”
Now comes the gut-wrenching part.
Chesney sadly let his fans and followers know that those 15 years are all that he got with Poncho. Earlier today, his beloved dog passed over the rainbow bridge, and now the country singer is left to navigate life without the two pooches that have been with him for the better part of the past two decades:
“We lost Poncho at 5:15am this morning and my heart is broken but yet so full cause I know he gave us all he had. We went down a lot of roads, lived a lot of life, and saw a lot of sunsets together. Poncho, my friend was right. I needed you and I thank you. Our connection and our bond will live forever and I’m gonna miss you. Say hello to DaRubaGirl for us. Goodbye Poncho. You were one heaven of a dog.”
RIP Pancho.
It’s always crushing to lose a pet. As the old saying goes, to you, your pet is just a small chapter of your life. But to them, you’re their whole book. And though it’s incredibly sad that Pancho has passed, the four-legged friend of Kenny Chesney lived quite the exciting life. Here are just a couple examples of the times that Kenny Chesney has given us some insight into the life of his beloved dog Pancho:
