If Koe Wetzel wants to make his grandma happy, he’ll get a gospel record put together.
The country music star recently joined the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast to talk about how becoming a dad has changed his life for the better, how Koe Wetzel Day came to be, new music that’s on the way, and his upcoming album being written before he became a father.
The Texas native also discussed his friends not recognizing him anymore because he’s a truly changed man, how he and Parker McCollum have been back in the studio together, and growing closer to God during this time of his life… and how excited his grandma would be for him to make a gospel album.
Before we got to the potential gospel project part of the conversation, Koe first covered how entering into fatherhood has led to him leaning more into his faith:
“I’ve always been a man of faith. I grew up in a Christian household. I feel like I kind of got away from that for a while. Not that I got away from it, but I kind of pushed it off. With becoming a dad, and me making all these changes in my life, I feel like it’s time to grow closer to God.
The more I reach out to Him, the more I ask Him for help, the more He shows it to me. It’s been really good to grow that, and continue to grow that. I’m nowhere where I want to be, but I’m working every single day to get to that point.”
And through that working, Wetzel has released that he wants to use his platform more to lead others to the Lord.
That revelation led us to ask if he’d be interested in a potential Christian-country crossover, or if he’d ever entertain a full fledged gospel record. Interestingly enough, the latter is something that Koe has thought a lot about… mainly because of a request from one very important person in his life:
“My grandma would be ecstatic. You know I’ve thought about… with my grandparents getting older, we’re all getting older. She’s always said that she wanted me to make a gospel record. That would be really cool. I’ve thought about it before. Just going back, I grew up on the ‘Heavenly Highway Hymns.’
Growing up in a Baptist, that old piano sound and stuff… I think it’d be really cool to do, especially for her. It’s what I grew up on. That’s how (I started) with my mom and everything, me singing in the church choir. That’d definitely be a full circle to go back in on that.”

Not only would it be full circle for him… it’d be one of the most surprising career pivots in all of music. But it clearly wouldn’t be outside of Wetzel’s wheelhouse, and I’ll speak for everyone when I say that a gospel album from Koe would certainly be a drop day listen.
