I hope these car owners had “bear coverage” included in their vehicle’s insurance.
When you are out in bear country, you have to be extra careful with things that you might otherwise be nonchalant about. If you aren’t used to locking your car, you really should when you visit a place where bears live. A Lake Tahoe resident got quite the shock when they discovered that a bear had broken into their vehicle, and unfortunately, they weren’t able to get the animal out until after it had done some serious damage.
It’s estimated that 340,000 bears live in the United States, and in certain parts of the country, residents have to always be on alert and keep an eye out for bears. Black bears make up most of that total number (around 300,000), and one place where you are almost guaranteed to see them is in Lake Tahoe, California.
Most of the time, you’d prefer to have an encounter with a black bear from a distance. The farther away you stay from a wild bear, the better. But this particular bear must have been “smarter than the average bear,” and brought the trouble to this Subaru-owning couple in Lake Tahoe. Much to the chagrin of the car owners, the small-but-effective bear broke into the parked vehicle and made themselves at home.
And by “at home,” I mean they destroyed the entire thing. The upholstery on the roof was completely shredded to bits. The seats were unrecognizable. One of the windows was smashed out. The rearview mirror was ripped down and was laying in the mangled driver’s seat. And the bear even had time to pee in the vehicle while it was ransacking it.
Bears tend to be pretty nosy creatures, and though they have been known to get violent when provoked (or if their cubs are messed with), they’re usually just trying to have a good time and live their best, bear life. And sometimes that means getting into a little trouble, in most cases because they are searching for food. That’s normally the main cause for any bear interacting with humans, and likely what was happening in this video.
The bear broke into the Subaru looking for a quick bite to eat, and ended up leaving the car owners with quite the insurance claim:
“POV: You’re going to bear country and wondering if you should leave your doors locked for bears or unlocked for bears.”
Man, that bear basically did a physical factory reset on that Subaru.
Obviously, there’s a really easy Su-bear-u joke sitting right there. I waited until now to point that out, and I believe I deserve some recognition for not immediately going after that low-hanging fruit. There were plenty of other jokes and funny observations in the comments left below the post:
“Bear-ly used Subaru for sale.”
“Luckily you recorded video of it happening. Insurance can’t argue that one. That guy was pretty small.”
“The pee was personal. That was unnecessary.”
“It’s amazing how they can open the door to get in but can’t ever seem to find their way out.”

That’s a positive way of looking at it.
