Taylor Sheridan has a certified hit on his hands.
I’ll admit that I enjoy just about everything Taylor Sheridan has done, beginning with films like Sicario, Hell Or High Water, and Wind River, but then came Yellowstone, and that show opened up a whole new world for Sheridan, both inside the Yellowstone universe, and otherwise.
We’re all familiar with the Yellowstone prequel series, 1883 and 1923, as well as the upcoming 1944 which has been green lit (spring of 2026). And then there is the modern day spinoffs that have been green lit as well…. The Madison starring Michelle Pfeiffer (already in production), the Rip & Beth spinoff, which is coming this fall; and then the Kayce Dutton spinoff, The Marshals, that will premiere on CBS in early 2026.
And then you have the Sheridan shows outside of Yellowstone such as Lioness, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown and the newest one, Landman. So far, I’ve really enjoyed the Jeremy Renner prison town series, Mayor Of Kingstown, but there’s not denying that Landman has MASSIVE potential to be a big show for Sheridan. And I enjoy that one a lot too… especially towards the end when a certain someone made their appearance (I wont’ spoil it). Of course, the great Sam Elliott has been confirmed for Season 2, which began production last month down in Texas, but according to the show’s leading man, Billy Bob Thornton, he has no idea how Season 2 ends… and they’re filming it now.
In a sit-down with Gold Derby, Billy Bob confessed that he’s only seen half the script so far, which is different than how Sheridan presented it to the cast for Season 1:
“Last year we had every episode when we started. We do not this year. We’ve only seen about half of it. I can tell you this much. I’m loving this season, the relationships are really growing and gelling, not only as actors, but with the characters. The first season of anything, you’re explaining everything to everybody and the trick to writing things like that is to not make it seem like exposition, and I thought Taylor did a wonderful job of that in Season 1.”
Naturally, you don’t need to spend time setting the stage and the characters when you’re writing the second season, so for him, this season has been really exciting so far:
“But now, people know who we are, so we don’t have to set anything up anymore. We just dove right into it and we were these people again… this season I’m actually gonna have a pillowcase on my head the entire season. Yeah, even when I’m eating, even at home, and it’s so exciting!”
Taylor Sheridan is known for keeping his plots close to the vest, especially when he has a mega hit on his hands. For the final season of Yellowstone, most of the cast got completely redacted scripts with only their scenes in it… to prevent any leaks. And in the prequel series 1923, the cast still doesn’t know how the Dutton family tree shakes out. Everyone is on a need to know basis.
So while that could be the case for Landman Season 2, there’s also the very real possibility that Taylor just hasn’t written it yet. Not that he doesn’t have an idea of where the story is going… he definitely does, but as someone who mostly writes all of these stories completely alone, and someone who is juggling 10 different shows at any given time (maybe more right now), it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he just hasn’t finished it yet. That was certainly the case with Yellowstone Season 5, which was split into two parts… that split (and the subsequent lack of a script) was also part of the reason Costner left.
While that might make some fans nervous (he’s definitely accused of rushing scripts often), I wouldn’t worry… Taylor has proven that he can come through under pressure, even when his star drops out of the show.
The second season of Taylor Sheridan’s Landman is set to premiere on Paramount+ in November 2025… get excited.
