Just two animals being dudes… sitting right next to each other on a picnic table… you definitely don’t see that every day.
A bald eagle and a fox were recently spotted hanging out together in the Dutch Harbor area of Unalaska, Alaska. Before I get any farther… yes, Unalaska, Alaska is a real place. It’s a city that’s located off mainland Alaska on an island named… you guessed it: Unalaska Island. There’s only about 4,000 to 5,000 people that call the hilariously named area home, which makes me think that they could potentially be outnumbered by bald eagles.
The state of Alaska holds the record for largest bald eagle population in all of America, with a total number estimated to be around 30,000.
So while it’s not out of the norm for people in the Unalaska area to see bald eagles, it is pretty wild for them to see one sitting right next to a fox… and not trying to eat it. Though a fox isn’t a bald eagle’s first choice for dinner, they have been known to scoop them up and eat them on rare occasion. Especially a young kit.
But with this one being a larger fox, the eagle apparently isn’t even entertaining that idea. The baldie and the fox are just sharing the space, and the people in the car from which this video was captured could barely believe it (they provided some very comical commentary):
“They’re just hanging out. Eagle and a fox… two predators just chilling out like homies. They are like, ‘I’ve got everything in the air, you’ve got everything on the ground.’ They have to be friends or that eagle would eat that fox.”
I’m in agreement with that breakdown… can’t really see the eagle taking a run at a fox that large but the rest checks out. How did the eagle and the fox become friends? Well, that’s for the writers of the Disney movie that will eventually be made about this encounter to find out.

As you might imagine, that video has gone mega-viral. It’s racked up over 2.9 million views, and social media users are flooding the comments with their guesses as to why the bald eagle and the fox were so comfortable sharing the picnic table:
