One of those “you know you’ve made it” moments.
Morgan Wallen has had plenty of those over the last few years, obviously, selling out stadiums and having multiple radio hits, but something like this feels even more special, I would imagine.
It was recently announced that his high school baseball field at Gibbs High School is going to be renamed in his honor, and will now be called “Morgan Wallen Field.” Knox County Schools’ Naming Committee approved the change just last week, and of course, Wallen was a student at Gibbs and also a member of the baseball team that won a state championship in 2010.
He graduated from Gibbs in 2011, and Principal Jason Webster submitted the nomination to district officials several months ago, notably discussing Morgan’s impressive career accomplishments and contributions to local schools in the area:
“Morgan played baseball at Gibbs during his time. He’s part of the 2010 state championship team and if you go to his concerts, you hear him speak fondly of his time with Gibbs Baseball coach Davis. He speaks very fondly of his time with coach and you see him wearing a Gibbs Eagles baseball jersey a lot of times.
He’s been positive promoter of Gibbs and has given back throughout his time after high school. We’re thankful for the things that he does, not just for Gibbs high school, but Knox County schools and the community at large. He’s a very giving person and we’re excited to do this for him.”
Morgan has donated over $140,000 for the nearby Gibbs Ruritan Park, and $100,000 for the Jefferson County Baseball park. Additionally, Morgan gave Gibbs High School $35,000 in 2023 to go toward providing instruments for the school’s students.
It’s clear that he loves his alma mater and that it still holds a special place in his heart, so it’s cool to see the school return the favor in a sense, in a way that I’m sure will mean more to Morgan than just about anything else. He often talks in interviews about how much he loved playing baseball and how much that time meant to him, so this a real honor for him, I’m sure.
It might be a while before he can get there to see the new name up in-person, because Morgan is gearing up to release the aforementioned new album and head out on his 2025 I’m The Problem stadium tour, and you can check out the full list of dates below.
He’s been teasing some of the new tunes, and I’d venture to guess the album will be out sooner rather than later, likely before his first tour stop in June.
