God bless New Orleans.
If you’ve been to NOLA, you probably have strong feelings about it one way or the other. It’s either the greatest city in the world, or it’s a shithole and you never want to go back.
I’m a little biased because I used to live there, but to me there’s nowhere better. The food, the music, the culture, the energy…I love it. I mean sure, there’s rampant crime and basic services like electricity, water and roads barely function. And everyone in the government is corrupt (but then again that’s not just in New Orleans). Oh, and the heat in the summer is downright oppressive and miserable.
But still, despite its problems, the Big Easy can’t be beat. The spirit of the city is unlike anywhere else.
And this chaotic video perfectly captures the spirit of the city.
In the video, a street performer named Maurice is doing his thing, as he often does, singing some Hank Williams Jr. and belting out “Family Tradition” on a street corner near the famous Bourbon Street. (If he looks or sounds familiar, Maurice has also performed alongside Morgan Wallen and even appeared on a recent season of American Idol. He’s one of my favorite street performers in the city).
But anyway, as Maurice is performing, he attempts to warn the crowd about oncoming traffic:
“Watch out for that truck.”
But it’s too late. We don’t see exactly what happened, but the truck somehow hit a lady in pink leggings, knocking her down and appearing to run over her leg before coming to a stop.
Meanwhile, a man with a Hand Grenade just keeps dancing, Maurice turns off his backing track, the crowd just keeps on walking by while surveying the scene (because there’s no doubt this isn’t the craziest thing they’ve seen that night), and the driver of the truck gets out as the crowd tends to the woman who was hit.
It’s pure chaos – but when isn’t New Orleans pure chaos?
I feel like Maurice summed it up best:
“Gah damn.”
