Hey, we’ve all been there.
Waylon Jennings saw a lot during his storied life. From flushing cocaine in a recording studio during a DEA raid to walking out on the recording of “We Are The World,” Waylon has plenty of stories that he could share, especially from his wilder times.
But Waylon also once shared the story of the most embarrassing thing that happened to him during his career.
Turns out, it happened during a show in Kansas City after Waylon had cleaned up his act and gotten off of drugs. But in getting sober, he had also gained some weight – about 25 pounds, according to Waylon.
Apparently the added weight made it a little harder for Waylon to get into his jeans – or as he put it:
“I had these Levi’s on that took four people to help me zip ’em up.”
Well Waylon was playing the show with Willie Nelson, but while onstage there were some ladies who were trying to get his attention to tell him that his zipper had broke.
“Now that’s what you worry about all the time, is your zipper broken?”
And as it turns out, Willie had some jokes about the situation:
“Willie came out and asked me if I was trying to count to 11.”
Classic Willie. And if you don’t get the joke…well, just think about it for a while.
His wife, Jessi Colter, had a solution though:
“Jessi came in with some black tape and taped up my britches.”
And with his taped up jeans, Waylon went back out on stage – though he asked his guitar player, Gary Scruggs (the late, great son of bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs), to keep an eye on his pants to make sure that little Waylon didn’t come out to play:
“I said, ‘Watch my fly. If that things comes up again let me know.'”
Well like a good bandmate, Waylon said that throughout the show he saw Scruggs playing guitar while also turning his head to sneak a peek at Waylon’s crotch to make sure that his Jennings wasn’t hanging out.
Gotta admit though, if this is the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to Waylon, sounds like he made it through alright.
