It’s The Fans’ Fault That Max Homa Nearly Headshotted Someone At The Player’s Championship

Ahh, the sights and sounds of The Player’s Championship.

Breeze sweeping across perfectly manicured north Florida lawns, murmurs of energy rippling through the crowd, the crack of titanium, arcing ball paths, the drop of a ball hitting the bottom of the cup; these are just a few of the things that make The Fifth Major such an iconic piece of professional golf.

But this weekend there was a different sight and sound that had the entire world queasy, if only for a moment.

Max Homa went into the 14th hole at TPC Sawgrass one-under for the third round and was hoping to end on a high note and get as close as possible to the leaders, but things didn’t quite go to plan.

His first tee shot went for a swim and the second wasn’t much better, landing in the pine straw under some trees near the out of play line.

Anyone who’s golfed even a few times knows how hard it is to hit a perfect lie and how close to impossible it is to hit a bad one, but the trust people have in professional golfers, even ones who just shanked two straight shots, will never cease to amaze me.

A crowd gathered around Homa to see how he’d work out of this situation, with some brave (and downright stupid) spectators lining up near directly in front of him.

His idea was to get the ball up and back onto the fairway, but whether it was the pine straw, the pressure, or just a bad day golfing, he shanked his third shot in a row, this time with almost dire consequences.

The ball rocked off the 4-iron and flew straight at the fans watching just feet away. From a few angles it looked (and sounded) like it cracked some poor soul right between the eyes, but fortunately it nailed a tree and bounced into the fairway.

If you haven’t seen the video you may not truly comprehend just how insane it was for the fans to be standing where they were. I get that the pros are really freaking good, but come on guys, you really don’t think it’s possible for him to mess up just a little bit and leave you dead on the spot?

Take a look at this angle from behind him.

WHY ARE YOU STANDING THERE?

Call me a fool but I just don’t get it. You could easily have seen his swing mechanics from a safer place and it wouldn’t improve your own shot one bit the next time you and the boys hit the muni, I promise you that.

Other angles make it look like someone got cracked in the head and the internet was a blaze thinking that Max Homa assassinated someone on live TV.

Check out this angle from someone standing LITERALLY RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GUY LAUNCHING A GOLF BALL AT OVER A HUNDRED MILES PER HOUR.

I 100% blame the fans for putting themselves there.

Homa later addressed the incident with some humor.

Max had even asked the crowd to move back to avoid a situation like this, but he said after a few times they had only moved a few feet back, so he just went on with his play.

Wild times at The Player’s Championship.

If anyone will be attending any professional golf tournaments, please do yourself a favor and don’t stand directly in front of where the people are hitting. Please, I don’t want to do a write up on how you got yourself hospitalized (or worse) because you wanted a cool video.
