It’s Lane Kiffin hate week in Oxford, Mississippi – and one Ole Miss fan has a theory that even…Ella Langley might be in on it.
I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to say that this weekend’s matchup between Ole Miss and LSU may be the biggest college football game we see all year. Obviously both teams are currently undefeated and ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll (LSU is currently sitting at #7 while Ole Miss is right behind them at #8), and the game has massive implications for the SEC championship and a college football playoff berth. But this game is way more than football: It’s LSU head coach Lane Kiffin’s highly-anticipated return to Oxford following his chaotic departure last season.
Chaos seems to follow Lane Kiffin wherever he goes, and the way he left Ole Miss to take the LSU job certainly rubbed a lot of people in Oxford the wrong way. After leading his team to the College Football Playoffs last season, Kiffin decided to jump ship to an in-conference rival after stringing the fans (and apparently the university) along for much of the season – while taking much of his coaching staff along with him.
You can see why Ole Miss fans might not be happy with him.
Well tensions are already high going into the game, College GameDay is coming to town with excitement through the roof, and Ole Miss is beefing up security ahead of Lane’s return. Louisiana governor Jeff Landry even floated the idea of using the military to keep the Tigers (and their coach) safe:
“I’m thinking about having to send him in on an F-16 and maybe the team on a C-130. Security is going to be really tight. You know, we might need the National Guard out there to protect our team. I think it’s going to be an interesting weekend.”<
And the trolling between the two teams and their fan bases has already started too: Earlier this week, Ole Miss served Tigers star defensive end Princewill Umanmielen with court papers in the parking lot of the LSU football facility, related to a lawsuit for breach of contract after the player followed Kiffin to Baton Rouge.
LSU, meanwhile, shocked the college football world earlier this week by releasing their latest injury report listing quarterback Sam Leavitt as “doubtful” to play on Saturday against Ole Miss – which most people dismissed as mind games from their coach. (He’s since been upgraded to “questionable”).
Now, I’m not saying this week is breaking people’s brains, but one Ole Miss fan apparently thinks that even Ella Langley is getting in on the trolling.
And you’re probably asking, what does the “Choosin’ Texas” singer have to do with any of this? She’s from Alabama, went to Auburn University, and doesn’t really seem to have a dog in the fight. But Ella played in Oxford last night in the latest stop on her massive Dandelion Tour, and apparently she was dropping clues as to who she’s rooting for – at least if you buy this guy’s conspiracy theory.
The whole thing was mapped out in a post on the 247Rebs message board by someone who admits they’re not even an Ella Langley fan, and didn’t attend the concert so they’re not sure of the setlist:
I’m not saying Ella Langley or Ole Miss Even scheduled a stop in Oxford two days before Lane Kiffin comes back to specifically troll him… But somebody needs to explain her current tour set list.
And to be clear, this may not be the exact song-for-song set she played last night. I didn’t attend, honestly didn’t even know who she was before this was scheduled. However, these are songs from her current tour.
It seems like this theory is falling apart pretty quick, but nonetheless, let’s hear them out.
The fan then proceeds to lay out exactly how each song in Ella’s catalog relates to Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss:
“I Gotta Quit” – Ole Miss finally realizing the Lane relationship might not be healthy.
“I Can’t Love You Anymore” – Pretty self-explanatory.
“Last Call for Us” – November 2025.
“Broken” – Ole Miss fans for about 72 hours.
“Wish I Didn’t Know Now” – Finding out Lane was looking around while Ole Miss was thinking playoff.
“Be Her” – Fine, LSU. He’s yours now.
“you look like you love me” – Six years of sharks, trolling State and telling everybody how much he loved Oxford.
“Loving Life Again” – Turns out life after Lane is actually pretty damn good.
And then the masterpiece:
“Choosin’ Texas.” – Just replace Texas with LSU.”
Well that’s certainly…a theory. I don’t quite understand how “Be Her” would relate to Ole Miss fans finally accepting that Lane Kiffin had moved on, when the whole song is about wanting to be another girl so bad that it hurts. And a couple others, like “you like you love me,” are a stretch as well when you look past the title to the actual lyrics of the song. Not to mention that “Choosin’ Texas” is about having to watch someone you’re in love with fall for somebody else, so I’m not sure it’s the happy ending that this fan seems to think it is.
Ella’s catalog is full of songs about heartbreak, and one of the reasons she’s so popular is not only her sound but the relatability of her lyrics. Could it be that this fan is reading too much into the setlist? Or did Ella Langley really plan this whole tour’s setlist, along with a stop in Oxford, Mississippi, just to troll a coach who left one school she has no connection to and went to another school she has no connection to?
I guess we’ll never know. But if she did, that was a big brain move on Ella’s part, and an even bigger brain move by this fan for picking up on it.
Saturday’s going to be absolutely wild.
