A stunning cover.

Megan Moroney released a beautiful rendition of Chris Stapleton’s “What Are You Listening To,” which is part of her CMT Campfire Sessions feature where all the songs are performed acoustically by the fire.

She very accurately noted at the beginning that it’s one of his most “criminally underrated” songs, and I could not agree with her more.

It’s one of the best deep cuts in his entire catalog, which is obviously saying a lot about the incredibly talented country superstar:

“We’re gonna play ‘What Are You Listening To’ by Chris Stapleton. It’s one of my favorite songs of his, and I think it’s criminally underrated.”

Written by Chris with Lee Thomas Miller, Stapleton actually released the song as his debut single to country radio back in 2013 after signing with Mercury Nashville, and it eventually peaked at #46 on the U.S. Billboard Country Airplay chart that same year.

After the single fizzled out on the country charts, Chris trashed the album that song was supposed to be on and got to work on his now-legendary record, Traveller. I think we at least deserve to hear that unnamed record one day, too, though.

Chris put out Traveller in May of 2015, and in November of 2015, he took the country music world by storm when he appeared on CMA Awards with Justin Timberlake to sing “Tennessee Whiskey”. The rest, as they say, is history.

It’s really interesting to hear the song from a female perspective, and I think Meg nailed it and sounds perfect in this simple, stripped-back acoustic setting which only highlights the timelessness and beauty of the song.
