When it comes to movies I have to see this fall and winter, Martin Scorsese’s latest film Killers of the Flower Moon is at the top of the list.
The movie is slated to drop October 20th, and has an absolutely loaded cast, including the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Brendan Fraser, Jesse Plemons, and more. But on top of that, we have some country singers making their way into the cast listing as well, including Sturgill Simpson, Randy Houser, and Jason Isbell.
Not to mention, Killers of the Flower Moon has a wild plot, as it’s about the murders of the Osage tribe after oil was discovered on their land. It’s based off the 2017 best-selling book by David Grann.
Scorsese discussed the plot in a recent interview:
“Killers of the Flower Moon was a series of murders of Osage men and women to bilk them after the discovery of oil on their land. I was drawn to the idea of to tell this terribly tragic story that was never brought to national attention.
One of the keys that I was drawn to this work where friendship and love existed with latent extortion, exploitation, and murder.”
However, Killers of the Flower Moon has one downfall…
It has a runtime of nearly 3.5 hours.
Yeah, I wouldn’t suggest getting any drinks before seeing this one in theaters, because you’re probably gonna be missing parts of the movie for multiple bathroom breaks. Nevertheless, Scorsese defended the movie’s long runtime in an interview with the Hindustan Times:
“People say it’s three hours, but come on, you can sit in front of the TV and watch something for five hours.
Also, there are many people who watch theater for 3.5 hours. There are real actors on stage, you can’t get up and walk around. You give it that respect. Give cinema some respect.”
I’m not saying that a movie can’t be great with a really long runtime. We saw the success of movies like Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, The Dark Knight, and more, but as people’s attention spans continue to shorten in today’s culture, I can imagine there are gonna be a lot of complaints about the length of this one.
I guess we’ll just have to see when the movie officially drops.
