Kevin Costner’s New Western Movie Series, ‘Horizon: An American Saga,’ Drops First Teaser

Lookin’ good, Kev.

If you’re a Yellowstone fan, or maybe just a Kevin Costner fan, you’ve undoubtedly heard about Horizon, the upcoming multi-part movie series that was written by Kevin Costner, directed by Kevin Costner, is produced by Kevin Costner, and even stars… wait for it… Kevin Costner.

It’s basically the project that killed Yellowstone…

Very long and complicated story short… this is how Yellowstone came to an end:

Amid the success of Yellowstone, and perhaps even before that, Kevin Costner had the desire to create his own western movie series called Horizon. He planned to write, produce, direct and even star in the multi-part film series, all while still starring as John Dutton on the hit Paramount Network series Yellowstone. This all would put Costner on a very tight filming schedule.

However, delays in production caused Yellowstone Season 5 to be cut into two pieces, and who is at fault for that is highly disputed. Costner blames Taylor Sheridan and company for taking their sweet time with scripts. Sheridan blames Costner getting sick and Covid for delays in production, but either way, Costner was gonna have to come back and shoot the second half… and he wasn’t down with that.

Costner said:

“Somewhere along the line they wanted to change things. They wanted to do 5A and 5B… which affected ‘Horizon.’ I was going to do my movie ‘Horizon’ and leave that show, do my movie, then do 5B.

A show I was only doing once a year I was now doing twice.”

When he started to complain, it sounds like Taylor Sheridan told him to kick rocks, wrote him out of the script, and decided he’d just end the series right here. Finish Season 5 (without Costner), and the roll off into another spinoff series starring Matthew McConaughey.

Costner sat down with Sheridan in an attempt to negotiate a way to continue the series, however it was reported that Costner wanted more money to film a second time, and wanted to be able to have some input in the script.

Sheridan once again told him to kick rocks, and it sounds like the Kevin Costner era will be done for good. Although, since they probably won’t be able to film the second half of Yellowstone Season 5 until next spring, there is always the chance they talk it over and figure something out. I won’t hold my breath, however Taylor said his opinion of Kevin hasn’t changed:

“My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t altered.

His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful … and I’ve never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work out on the phone. But once lawyers get involved, then people don’t get to talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and attempt to shift blame based on how the press or public seem to be reacting.

He took a lot of this on the chin and I don’t know that anyone deserves it. His movie seems to be a great priority to him and he wants to shift focus. I sure hope it’s worth it… and that it’s a good one.”

And that brings us back to Horizon, which has officially released its first teaser.

Officially titled Horizon: An American Saga, Chapter 1 and 2 will respectively hit theaters on June 28th and August 16th of next year. The project will star Costner along with Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, and more.

Here’s a quick synopsis:

“‘Horizon: An American Saga’ explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many.

Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.”
