The feud of two mullets.

This is very toxic to admit, but I miss the days when artists weren’t afraid to throw a little smoke at each other.

Travis Tritt and  Billy Ray Cyrus had some iconic beef when he released “Achy Breaky Heart.”

The single released in 1992 sky-rocketed Billy Ray Cyrus into the limelight. The single landed Cyrus on the charts internationally, was a significant crossover hit, and eventually led to an AMA Award in 1993.

The song is a classic; whether you enjoy it or not, there is no denying that the lines of:

“But don’t tell my heart, my achy, breaky heart,”

Are recognizable anywhere.

While the nation was eating up the “Achy Breaky Heart” star, his fellow mullet sporting country music colleague, Travis Tritt, admitted he was not a fan of the up-and-comer.

Tritt noted in an interview that he thought the music video for the hit single was ridiculous given Billy Ray was still a new name among country music fans… insinuating that no one knew who he was.

He also called the song “frivolous” and said “I don’t think ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ makes much of a statement.”

He later told the Baltimore Sun, that is wasn’t anything personal, he just didn’t like the song:

“I simply said that I didn’t like a song, didn’t like a video, and darned sure didn’t want to turn country music into an ass-wiggling contest. And you would have thought I cut up a picture of the pope.”

In his autobiography, he confessed that he apologized to Billy Ray for the comments and sent him a gift.

Only a few months later, when Cyrus won the AMA for the track, he gave Tritt a slight middle finger in his acceptance speech.

“And as far as I’m concerned, for those people who don’t like “Achy Breaky Heart…”

Here’s a quarter… call someone who cares!”

While the feud did not last very long, the battle of the Mullets will live on in history.

While one mullet had longer-standing success over the other, there is no denying that both Tritt and Cyrus played integral parts of ’90s country music.

While you’re here, check out the video that Tritt deemed so absurd. I promise the dancing isn’t as bad at the end of the TikTok…
