The world very sadly lost a great musician today.

Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor passed away at the age of 56, according to the BBC, and a cause of death has not been given.

Her family provided a statement to The Irish Times, saying how devastated her friends and family are:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

She released 10 studio albums throughout her career, and of course, her biggest hit and signature song written and composed by Prince, “Nothing Compares 2 U,” became a mega success, and was named the #1 song in the world in 1990 by Billboard.

And back in 1993, she teamed up with country music’s own Willie Nelson for a stunning cover of “Don’t Give Up,” which was included on Willie’s 40th studio album Across the Borderline.

“Don’t Give Up” was written by English rocker Peter Gabriel and originally recorded by him as a duet with Kate Bush for Gabriel’s fifth solo studio album So in 1986.

Sinéad had such an incredibly unique voice and captivating vocals, and this is certainly a duet I will cherish even more knowing that we’ll never hear anything like it again.

RIP Sinéad.
